Wildlife Around Frank Long

Check out these pictures that were taken by our Outdoor trail camera! Who knew Frank Long had such an active wildlife so close by! Look closely at the pictures to see the dates the photos were taken and what time of day it was. As you can see the animals are really busy at night! Do you know the names of all these animals?

The Elisa Butler Memorial Outdoor Classroom has been a Frank Long project for many years. The original idea to create an outdoor learning environment began with a former principal, Dr. Vicki Albritton. Under her leadership, the nature trail was begun. A few years later, a second grade teacher, Susan Fennell, wrote a Bright Idea Grant and was awarded enough money to purchase our greenhouse. It was around this time that the idea to name it in honor of Elisa Butler as she was such an inspiration for children and loved providing hands on learning experiences for her first grade students. Four years ago Wanda Smith and Judy Hellgren wrote another grant and Frank Long was awarded a $5000 Lowe's Outdoor Classroom grant. This award allowed us to expand. We added a fish pond, vegetable garden, butterfly garden, composter, weather station, nature trail camera, deer feeder and other supplies necessary to work the garden. With the help of our supporting military unit the nature trail boardwalk was finally completed.

Each year, we work to expand our Outdoor Classroom and think of new ways to use it with our students. Our Outdoor Classroom will most likely be a work in progress. We hope you enjoy reading about the wonderful experiences we are providing our students at Frank Long Elementary.
